The agent works
The first pass is the run you started. Nothing looks different yet — the Goal shows as a small chip in the progress line above the message box.
Some requests are done in one reply. Others — draft the brief, build the deck, get the tests green — take more than one attempt, and you would rather not sit there re-prompting. A Goal is how an agent keeps working on a request like that after its first pass, without you asking again.
You do not set up a Goal. Choosing Deep for a real request is what creates one. The agent checks its own result afterwards and, if the request is not met, books another pass — up to a limit, inside a credit budget you can see on the card, and never for a greeting or a one-word reply.
All three have to be true:
| Condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| You chose Deep | On the Auto / Fast / Deep pill in the message box, or as the agent’s default in its settings. A message the platform routed to Deep on its own runs deep, but does not become a Goal. |
| It is a real request | “Draft a one-page brief in Google Docs about today’s top AI news” is a Goal. “hi”, “ok thanks”, “yes” and a thumbs-up are not, whichever mode is set. |
| You sent it in the conversation | Scheduled runs, loops, background wake-ups and follow-ups the agent booked for itself never create a new Goal of their own. |
The Goal takes its name from the first sentence of your message, so you can recognise it later.
The agent works
The first pass is the run you started. Nothing looks different yet — the Goal shows as a small chip in the progress line above the message box.
The result is checked
When the run ends, a separate check decides whether your request was met. If it was, that is the end of it — no extra pass, no extra notification.
A follow-up pass is booked
If it was not met, another Deep pass is booked a couple of minutes later, with what still needs doing. The chip becomes a card so you can see it coming.
It stops when it should
A Goal ends when the request is met, when it reaches its pass limit, when its credit budget is used up, or when you stop it.
Each follow-up pass is a normal Deep run in the same conversation, labelled with its pass number (Pass 2 of ≤5). Because those passes can run while you are away, they count against your organisation’s daily allowance for unattended work, and Goals are available on paid plans.
You never need a special command. Say what “done” looks like in plain English — “done means the doc exists and has all five items” — and the agent records it as the acceptance criteria the check uses. Say “stop working on that” and the Goal ends. The card has a Stop button that does the same.
Sending a new request in the same conversation replaces a Goal the agent created for itself. If you set the criteria yourself, a short reply like “yes” or “try the second option” keeps steering the same Goal instead.
